Introduction

This three-day instructor-led intensive course provides the knowledge and skills necessary for SMS specialists to plan and deploy Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 into large enterprise environments.

Prerequisites

Before attending this course, students must have:

• Completed Course 2596, Managing Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003, or have equivalent knowledge
• Completed Course 2279, Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003 Active Directory® Infrastructure, or have equivalent knowledge

Course Outline

Module 1: Preparing for Systems Management Server 2003

In this module, you will learn how to describe a business case for installing Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 in your organization. In order to create this business case, you will learn the steps involved in the SMS planning and deployment process.

You will begin by analyzing your current environment before planning the deployment.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

• Describe the business case for SMS.
• Describe the SMS planning and deployment process.
• Describe Phase One of the SMS planning and deployment process - Analyze your current environments.

Module 2: Planning the SMS 2003 Hierarchy

In this module, you will design a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 hierarchy. You will learn how to plan site boundaries and site communications as well as determine server capacity. You will also explore network and infrastructure security issues and best practices.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

• Design the SMS site hierarchy.
• Plan site boundaries and roaming boundaries.
• Determine SMS component server capacity.
• Plan network and infrastructure security for SMS 2003.

Module 3: Planning for Systems Management Server 2003 Deployment, Part 1

In this module, you will learn how to plan for Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 deployment. You will explore how to plan client installation, site deployment, site configuration, and a site system. You will also learn how to configure the SMS security environment. You will use various job aids as you plan the deployment. Finally, you will complete the module by creating an SMS Deployment Plan.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

• Identify the considerations for planning client installation.
• Describe the considerations of site deployment planning.
• Discuss the factors for planning site configuration.
• Describe the overall factors of planning the site systems.

Module 4: Planning for Systems Management Server 2003 Deployment, Part 2

This module is a continuation of Module 3: Planning for Systems Management Server 2003 Site Deployment, Part 1. You will learn key concepts for configuring the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) security environment. Then you will learn about the key components of a deployment plan. You will complete the module by developing an SMS Deployment Plan.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

• Plan the configuration of the SMS security environment.
• Develop the SMS Deployment Plan.

Module 5: Deploying Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003, Part 1

Using the information from the planning phase, you will practice deploying Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003. You will apply the planning decisions made for Northwind Traders in previous modules.

After completing this module, students will be able to:

• Configure the environment before deployment.
• Install an SMS primary site.
• Configure the site after installation.
• Install site systems.
• Deploy clients.

Module 6: Planning and Deploying Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003, Part 2

In this module, you will learn to configure a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) site hierarchy, and how to back up and recover data. Students will complete the module by troubleshooting an SMS deployment.
